March 2008

Saw this vid on AJ Brooks’ blog. Startling information. good wake up call.

Silver at Drum Circle  Sir and Lady  Faerie

 Avilion dragons

The role play was a great experience. I spoke at length with the faerie above who explained some of the rules to me – call everyone Lord and Lady, no flying until you’re a member of Avilion and the Goreans are evil – and I enjoyed watching others interact. When I was about to leave, these two beautiful dragons showed up and chatted with the faeries – it was enchanting!

Silver's new look

As I identify more and more with my alter ego, Silver Tomorrow, I feel the need to make her look a bit less, well, old. The Silver hair was a nice touch, but she just looks better as a brunette. I found her a new skin I like finally too.

March has been an incredible month with 10 major deadlines in it for me. Among the most interesting of those has been a presentation to an undergraudate Communications class on Graphic Design. The instructor is a husband of a friend and wanted to give his students a heads up on virtual worlds – smart man! So, I gave a very brief presentation and then took them all in-world. It was a challenge keeping all 14 (ish) of them on task but they did pretty well. The experience taught me that a hands-on approach needs more structure and planning than I gave this one – I was expecting to talk more but they just looked sooo bored!! So, lesson learned. Maybe PowerPoint really is evil!

My husband knows as much, if not more, about SL as I do. He and I had the privilege (same day) of presenting to the faculty of the College of Education and Human Development during a “Desserts and Demos” gathering. There were only a few people in attendance so we were able to really focus on the interests of the attendees. Everyone there seemed intrigued, and some even excited, about the possibilities for T&L. The people in Counseling were particulary engaged and I was glad we had prepared with some specific examples for them.

The scholarship, grant, and PhD deadlines hit in March, along with an EdPsych midterm (got the highest score in the class thanks to two great study partners - woot!). Another workshop is a couple days away on Educational Uses of SL. I’m excited about this one – I think I’m going to approach it from Bloom’s taxonomy and find specific examples of how each domain and level can and are being applied in SL. If I have time – this PhD essay is killer!!! I’ve spent a lot of time on it. I wish I had done what some of my competitors did and used something I already wrote! Oh well, it’s done now. Next is finishing up the webpage and resume. Oh – I have also uploaded most of my presentations to slideshare - neat site.  http://www.slideshare.net/Silver_Tomorrow
